Genetic Engineering allows scientists to transfer genes from one organism to an organism of a different species; and in Selective Breeding organisms within the same species with certain desirable characteristics are mated to produce a new variety. The difference between the two is in Genetic Engineering manually transfers genes between species and Selective Breeding mates varieties within the same species to produce a new variety.

In selective breeding you are relying on the natural random distributions of genes in the mating process. By rewarding some combinations (which manifest themselves in some desirable trait) and by discouraging others (i.e. not allowing those without the trait to procreate), you can (after numerous generation) arrive at an organism with traits that are predictably more desirable than those of their ancestors.

In genetic engineering you are forcibly inserting genes into the procreation process to create a new organism. These genes may be from an animal of the same species, a different animal/plant, or (in theory) genes can be designed from scratch.

The main difference is that with genetic engineering you can potentially arrive at a result much more quickly than with selective breeding, and you can create new organisms that would be virtually impossible to achieve through selective breeding.

How are genetic engineering and selective breeding the same?

Selective breeding is a category that has genetic engineering in it. while selective breeding is choosing a trait or feature to breed on, genetic engineering is a man made change in a subjects genes

What part of science is selective breeding?

Genetics - or genetic engineering.

The science of improving hereditary qualities is known as?

Selective breeding or Genetic Engineering or Eugenics

Methods for developing organisms with desirable traits?

1. Selective Breeding - the 2 types of breeding is Hybridization and Inbreeding2. Cloning - when you copy exactly the same genes as the organism from which it is produced3. Genetic Engineering - Genes from one organism are transferred into the DNA of other organism's. Usually for medicines and food crops

What process do humans use to influence the traits of a species?

selective breeding; been going on for thousands of years. genetic engineering; been going on for decades.

Why genetic engineering is superior to selective breeding?

Genetic engineering: -more specific changes -changes are more controlled -takes less time to enact -lack of variation

A form of genetic engineering in which plants or animals are selected to breed and give offspring with desirable characteristics is known as?

Selective Breeding

Which outcome is possible using genetic engineering but not using selective breeding?

The insertion of a [desired] gene segment into an existing chromosome.

What biotechnological methods make selective breeding in live stock possible?

AI (artificial insemination), and, arguably, genetic engineering.

What would genetic engineering and selective breeding go under?

It depends. If youre talking about a category, I guess they'd be under health science and health engineering.

Without genetic engineering horses would have been domesticated?

Horses were domesticated long before the concept of genetic engineering was even selective breeding.

What is the fastest way to cross-breed animals?

I'm not sure if this is the fastest but it is faster than selective breeding. it is called genetic engineering
