The Romans had difficulty in converting the pagans to Christianity as they found it so hard to belive in just one male god and give up their belief in a goddess. So the Romans painted over statues of the goddess and turned Mother Mary into a godlike figure claiming the staues were now her. In The Bible she's actually not mentioned much. The Black Madonna is one famous example of a goddess statue that was painted over and claimed to now be Mary. Christianity had to adapt some pagan beliefs in order to make the people convert.

New AnswerMary, the mother of Jesus, filled an important functional role for the formerly pagan peoples of the Roman/Hellenistic world. These new Christians had to fill the gap created by the loss of a female religious principal, i.e. Juno/Hera, Ceres/Demeter, etc. Mary began to assume some of the features of these goddesses and could fill the need for both men and women to invest their religious heart in the warmth of a mother figure. Over time Mary became extremely mythologized in the same way as did her son Jesus. Their real historical lives became something of a skeleton upon which to invest religious meaning. This is in no way to imply that both Jesus and Mary are unworthy of such adoration. Rather, they were natural choices in the evolutionary development of the faith. The early Christians had already seen the saving power of God in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and the late Classical newly converted from paganism Christians saw in Mary the fidelity to God's will when she accepted the angel's invitation in the infancy narrative, and her motherly love at the foot of the cross. Her virginity was in keeping with Diana's and the vestal virgins of Rome. Many men and women have felt great love from Mary and without hesitation proclaim her the Mother of God. Feminists have begun to see in her the seeds of a renewed respect for the female religious principal. She is arguably the second most important figure in Christianity, and many will continue to find strength in her devotions
