The Odyssey relates to the modern world in the sense that it is classical literature. Classical literature focuses on main issues and struggles of a particular generation.

The real themes of the book that reflect the time include,

  • Maintaining ones property: In the book, a person's property defines them. Odysseus sees many great wonders over his long journey from home, but he is continuously yearning for his kingdom of Ithaca.
  • Respect for others & God(s): When a suitor throws a stool at beggar Odysseus another says that he shouldn't of, because anyone could be a god in disguise.
  • Loyalty: The loyalty of the Herders helped Odysseus regain his estate, and the loyalty of Penelope allowed him not to suffer a fate like Agamemnon. His love for his wife is very clear throughout the epic, although he doesn't stay loyal when tempted by Circes and Calypso.
  • Coming of age: The epic recounts Telemachus's coming of age.
  • Dealing with the outcome of war: After the glory of war is over, Odysseus and his men struggle to come to grips with the problems of life.

The Odyssey is also relevant today because it exhibits values such as perseverance, determination, faith, cleverness, fortitude, and goodwill.

Today people still struggle with long journey's, separation from family and spouses, and temptation. The Odyssey can compare to the challenges we face today, just on a bigger scale. It is the ultimate story of finding oneself.

The Odyssey is a poem written by the ancient Greek poet Homer. It tells of the Greek hero Odysseus trying to return home, the suitors trying to marry Penelope, and Telemachus trying to find Odysseus.
