It depends what sort of filling and what anesthetic you had. If it is the tooth-colored one then you are good as soon as the UV light sets it, if you have the silver colored filling then it is best to wait 24 hours to eat on that side of your mouth.

Firstly do you have an injection to make you numb? if you did then it would be an idea to wait till the numbness wears off so you don't burn or bite yourself.
Secondly it depends on the material used to do the filling, if it is a white filling these are set as soon as you leave so you can eat straight away, if it is a metal filling you need to wait a few hours.
It really depends wether you get a shot(numbed) or not, if you are numbed, you will have to wait until the anesthetic has worn off, and you have sensation in your mouth. If you are not numbed you will still have to wait until the filling is completely set. It depends on what sort of filling you have. Your dentist will tell you.
