Regular first class mail can sometimes be delivered in as little as one day. It would not be unusual to have first class mail delivered in some California municipalities with Mississippi post marks from the previous day. I have had mail delivered the same day, when I dropped it just after midnight at a regional mail processing facility. A letter posted in a mailbox in the late afternoon won't even be picked up and post marked until the following day--two days if mailed on a Saturday.
I would estimate the average first class delivery time between Mississippi and California to be about three days. East/West delivery tends to be substantially faster than North/South delivery. Letters from Washington to Idaho (states that border each other) can require two weeks for delivery.
