There are five branches of the military, but actually seven of the uniformed services.

The military branches are:

  • United States Air Force
  • United States Army
  • United States Coast Guard
  • United States Marine Corps
  • United States Navy

The other two uniformed services are:

  • United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps

These are actually civil departments with a small uniformed component within them.

Organizations such as the Civil Air Patrol and United States Merchant Marine are not military branches, but rather, auxiliary services of the military.

State Guard Forces/State Defence Forces are notmilitary branches, but rather, are paramilitary organizations which fall under the executive branches of their respective state.

Five - Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marines. The Marine Corps is under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Navy. The Coast Guard is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security, and can be reverted to the Department of the Navy under wartime conditions.
