The very nature of an individual event means that, yes they do compete against each other. Think of the Olympics where both Shawn and. Asia made to finals...they certainly would disallow one from competing simply because they were both from the US.
yes, a lot, for example there is the womens jerk and clean, obviously not open to men to compete. Im not sure of any event that hosts both male and females competing against each other. If you mean an event that doesnt have a male competition then i am pretty sure that is a no because they might not see it fair. Hope that helped
