A dentists income is based off of how many patients he/she sees in a day. They can work 1 hour a week and not make squat, they can work 40 hours a week and make good - excellent money, depending on the treatment, how much you charge, what materials you use, what kind of staff you hire. If you decide to not refer patients to specialists and learn to do endodontics and oral surgery with continued studies and education, you can earn even more. General dentists do pretty well even with refering patients out to specialist, though.
