Penicillin does not cure illnesses, only stops infections. It is an antibiotic, meaning it kills bacteria, and that's it. Its great, because it is not toxic to humans, but it is very toxic to bacteria. So, we take it, nothing happens to us, but any bacteria that happen to be calling our bodies home will soon be killed off.

There are some bacteria that have become resistant to penicillin, so other antibiotics need to be used. The theory is that the more often we (as a society) take penicillin, the stronger the germs will eventually become, over a period of time. If we kill off all the weak bacteria, eventually, only the strong ones that are not effected by antibiotics will be left, and that would be a disaster for us all.

Why is penicillin called the wonder drug?

Penicillin saved thousands of lives during the wars . It also saved the lacerated eye of the miner which was to be removed if not treated with penicillin. All major causes of death in hospitals such as the pneumonia, scarlet fever, blood poisoning, diphtheria, tonsillitis, rheumatic fever and many other harmful diseases were all successfully treated with penicillin. The discovery of penicillin brought about one of the biggest searches in medical history. Penicillin was so powerful that even after being diluted thousand times it was still effective in killing bacteria. It can save peoples lives without harming them. Yet, without the discovery of penicillin, all the antibiotics would possibly never have been discovered. That's the reason why penicillin was called a "wonder drug".
