As of 2007, there were 18 megacities according to "Living in the Environment, 15th Ed., G. Tyler Miller, Jr." See Chapter 23 on Urbanization and Transportation. It's possible that this information is now considered to be outdated.

It should be noted that megacities can alternatively referred to as megalopolises.
