We don't really know the numbers now that the pandemic is over. The counts that break out Swine Flu from other types of flu are not being kept any more (and they were only estimates mostly anyway). The rapid field lab tests mostly just check for any Type A influenza virus, and they are not typically sent off for more specific cultures unless there is a patient hospitalized and they need to know more specifically for life saving efforts (even then, the treatment is not much, if any, different), or for postmortem testing to rule out other Infectious Diseases that need follow up for others in the community.

See the related questions below for more info on counts when they were being done. However, now that there is a vaccine and some naturally acquired immunity from infections, it is anticipated that there will be less incidence going forward.

It is estimated that the tally of world wide seasonal flu cases each year is 340,000,000 to one billion infected. Of those there are 250,000 to 500,000 deaths, giving a mortality range of 0.025% to 0.147%.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the US, with seasonal flu, there are typically over 30 million cases. With 200,000 hospitalizations from flu related causes and, on average, 36,000 deaths. The seasons vary in timing, duration and severity. Seasonal influenza can cause mild to severe illness. Of those hospitalized, 20,000 are children younger than 5 years old. Over 90% of deaths and about 60% of the hospitalizations occur in people older than 65. Based on that, the typical annual influenza mortality rate in the US is 0.12%.
