It is impossible to state exactly but wikipedia places the number at: The total number of casualties in World War I, both military and civilian, were about 37 million: 16 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 6.8 million civilians. The Entente Powers (also known as the Allies) lost 5.7 million soldiers and the Central Powers about 4 million.

There were about 117,000 Americans who died in WWI. This includes about 53,000 killed by the enemy, and about 63,000 dead from other causes, mostly disease, especially the Spanish Influenza which killed millions worldwide in 1918. The 53,000 battle deaths would have been mostly Army infantrymen, with a very small representation of Army Air corps and Navy personnel. The Coast Guard lost 192 men. There were over 700 civilian deaths, including the 128 on the Lusitania in 1915, with the rest being mostly merchant sailors on ships sunk by German submarines.
