This varies both from state to state and sometimes even from school to school. Most schools that use the expression "term" divide the year into four equal parts, or quarters, of about ten weeks each. If the school is using semesters, these are usually closer to 18 weeks in length, and are divided into fall and spring, with a slightly shorter summer semester wedged between. When the terms are semesters there are two in the academic calendar, and four when the terms are quarters.
