That depends on a few factors, such as the insulation values of your home, geographical location, orientation of the windows, and efficiency of the air conditioner.

If you have bad insulation or your windows all face south and west, the area will be lowered drastically. If you live in the southern United States, a 2 1/2 ton unit may only cool 1000 square feet, while in Canada some 1500 square foot homes are cooled by the same unit.

Whatever you do, make sure it is sized right! Ensure your heating and cooling contractor does a proper heat loss and gain design to determine the proper size unit. There's nothing worse than getting an undersized unit that doesn't cool your home!
