Not many... whales know how to stay clear of boats. In fact, they are quite difficult to hit when you are trying. This issue is not a reason why whales are endangered. The more serious issue is whaling.

Because many animals, including whales, can sense when there's about to be an earthquake, so the whales all left Japanese waters.
Why are finback whales endangered?
Because of commercial whaling. Between c. 1870 and 1988 over 55,000 fin whales were caught in the North Atlantic; over 70,000 were caught in the North Pacific between 1910 and 1975; and over 700,000 were caught in the Southern Hemisphere between 1904 and 1978.
