Both Coins and Paper Money require several steps to produce.

Coins are made from large rolls of metal that are run through a machine than punches out circular blanks called planchets. It's a lot like forming cookies from dough using a cookie cutter.

The planchets are next fed into an "upsetting" machine. The term doesn't mean it makes them anxious; "upsetting" means that it squeezes the blanks just a little bit to form a raised lip around the edge.

The upset blanks are then fed into coin presses that are fitted with dies that strike the front (obverse) and back (reverse) images into the metal. The process is automated so each press can strike thousands of coins every hour.

Depending on the coin's design, they may next be fed through another machine that presses lettering into its rim (e.g. US $1 coins, EU €1 coins, etc.) or they may be plated with another metal to give the coins a different color (e.g. US and EU 1-cent coins).

Bills are printed on large sheets of specially-formulated paper or polymer. Each sheet holds multiple bills; for example in the US 32 or sometimes 50 bills can be printed all at once.

The press has large flat beds that are coated with ink to form the bill's design on each side of the paper or plastic. Depending on how many colors are in the bill's design and how many special security features it carries, the sheets may have to go through multiple presses to add all of the design elements.

"How Coins are Made" First, an engraver designs the coin. Then, the molds are made out of plastilene. They are many times bigger than normal. After the mold dries, plaster of Paris is poured into a mold. When the plaster is dry, it is called a negative. After the molds are made, they have to be approved by many people, including the President. When it is approved, an electronically-controlled machine processes a mold of copper, called a galvano. Then, the mold is made smaller. It is called a hub, and is made out of steel. The master hub is called a die. The die makes stamps, which will press the coins to make the head and tail sides of the coin.To make a coin, you must start with a piece of metal or copper. You must first melt the metal or copper to get the circle shape. To do this, you must melt bars of metal or copper. The bars are heated in a big furnace until they are boiling. The melted bars are poured into the long tubes, called ingot forms. The melted bars are called ingots. After ingots are poured into ingot forms, they are cooled by water that runs through the form. When the ingot cools, it is still too hot to touch, so a crane takes the ingot out of the form. The crane then takes it to more water, until it is cool enough to handle. After it is finally cool enough to handle, it is taken to the rolling mill. Did you know that each time it passes through the rollers it gets thinner? Also, did you know that the roller will crush the ingot up to 22 times to make it the same thickness as a coin? After that, blank coins are punched out, called blanks. The blanks will be softened, so the die can be stamped on it. Blanks are put into tumbling barrels with chemicals, so they can be shiny. Then, the blanks are put into drying machines. After that, they are put into an upsetting machine that raises up the edges. After they are raised, they are checked. The bad ones are melted again, and the good ones get to go to the coin press. At the top of the coin pressing machine, the good blanks will go in. The dies stamp the tops and the bottoms of the blanks. After the coin is stamped and checked, it is weighed. Then, they will be inspected one final time. Finally, they can be sent to banks and be used

"How paper money is made" All paper money in the United States is made and printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The Secretary of the Treasury approves coin designs. Coins are made in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The Secretary makes the final decisions.Soft wax is used to make the first model of a coin. A plaster of Paris model is made from the wax model. The second model is used to add designs. Using epoxy, a third model is made.Strips of metal go through the blanking presser. These machines cut coin shapes called blanks. After blanks are made, they are prepared for stamping. Blanks are heated to soften them, and then they are washed in chemicals. Blanks are polished, rinsed, and dried. Blanks are used to make coins such as dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Coins are milled to produce grooved edges. Two metal dies are used to make one coin design. One die is for the front of the coin, and the other is for the back of the coin. Two dies hit the blank at the exact same time. The blanks can be hit with as much as 170 tons of pressure! After the coins are stamped, they are separated into two piles. The correct sized coins go in one pile, and the incorrect sized coins are put in another pile. The incorrect sized coins are melted so they can be used again. Banks all across the US receive the correct sized coins in canvas bags.In order to make a strong coin, three layers of metal are bonded together. Did you know that the center of a coin is pure copper? The outer layer is copper and nickel combined. Five-cent nickels are made of cupronickel. Cupronickel is a metal alloy that is made of 3/4 copper and 1/4 nickel. One-cent pennies are made from a copperplated zinc.Coins are made to celebrate historical events, to honor famous people, and they are made for collectors. Proof coins are polished by a special process, and are made specifically for collectors. The can be more valuable than pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, and half dollars.Engravers are used to cut bill designs on a steel plate. The bill design goes to a printing plate on the printing press. Presses are fed with special paper used to make paper money. Thirty-two bills can be printed with just one sheet of paper. The ink on the back of the bills has to dry before the front can be printed. The paper used to print bills is a special kind of grass.
