You should NOT need foot on the brake to start the vehicle, only to shift gears. This feature is a critical safety item and should nevver be disabled! If you have to apply brake to start the vehicle, then it sounds like you are not fully in park. Try starting in neutral, with emergency brake on, and no foot on brake pedal. If that works and it still won't start in "park", then you really have a serious electrical/mechanical issue and need a pro to look at it.
