Free to play - Don't pay anything ....... ever! You can play two characters up to level 50, however you have severe limitations on your experience rate, inventory, and UI bars (among most other things). No cargo bay access, very limited chat access, no /who list, one crew skill, credit capped at 200,000, 20 planet commendatoins at a time.
Preferred status players have more freedom. Preferred players are ones that were subscribed at one time, or people who spent at least $4.99 in the SWTOR Store. Even buying the physical security device qualifies you for Preferred status. Preferred status people have more access to chat and the /who list, more crew skills, and they gain the use of the cargo bay.
