UC Berkeley is one of the most difficult schools to get into in the United States. In short, they select from among the best and the brightest, and are known for further selecting from within this pool for life/work experience and unique traits and accomplishments. They accept around 22 percent of applicants annually. The University attracts many applicants due to its accomplishments, history, and legacy. While perhaps not as prestigious as private/Ivy League schools like Stanford, it is much harder to survive and succeed in the Berkeley environment. No handholding or coddling, no automatic reminders or assistance with registering for classes, etc. Social Darwinism exemplified. There are about 30k people working, studying, and living on the campus and surrounding area.
