Urine of a person with a diseased kidney differs from that of a healthy person in one or more of the following ways:

  • Volume- There may be polyuria(more quantity of urine), oliguria(less quantity) or anuria(no urine output at all- it is due to chronic renal failure)
  • Specific gravity- it increases in various nephritic and nephrotic syndromes
  • Colour- may be red or brown(due to blood), or milky (containing pus) etc.
  • appearance- urine may be turbid rather than being clear
  • pH- may be variable
  • Odour- may be ammoniacal due to stasis
  • Protienuria- there will be proteinuria (more than the normal 50mg/day)
  • Blood- there may be whole red blood cells or just hemoglobin
  • Lipiduria- there may be lipids in urine
  • Glucosuria- glucose in urine
  • Ketonuria- ketone bodies in urine-acetone, acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid
  • bile salts and bile pigments in urine
  • Cells- pus cells, red cells, epithilial cells, cell casts) may be found in urine
