Counting atoms is easy. Within the formula are chemical symbols. Each symbol represents the presence of an atom of a specific element within the compound or molecule (not the same thing but different question). If more than one atom of that element is present, then a subscript behinf the symbol is used to indicate that. For instance, water is H2O. The "2" tells us that there are 2 hydrogen attoms in this compound. The presence of the "O" means that one oxygen atom is present. If we look at H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), this tells us there is 2 hydrogen atoms AND 2 oxygen atoms because there is a subscripted 2 behind both symbols.

All you have to do is take the subscript after the parenthesis (on the outside) and multiply it by the subscript on the inside of the parenthesis. if there are no subscripts on the inside or out just count them as one.

EX:Co(No3)2

take 2 and * it by 1 which stands for the subscript of N and it =2

take 2 and * it by 3 which stands for the subscript of O and it=6

2*1=2 (N=2)

2*3=6 (0=6)

Ex:Ca(Co3)4

4*1=4

4*3=12

C=4

O=12
