He was seized by the people of the time for speaking about Jesus being the Son of God. He was brought to the Sanhedrin and they were angry about what he said about Jesus, so they dragged him out of the city and stoned him to death.

The account at Acts 6:8-7:60 tells the story and explains what happened.

God had used the Nation of Israel as his chosen people for years, so when the little band of Christians appeared, following the 'so called Christ'(Matthew 27:17), and claiming to have God's backing, there was much jealousy and a haughty resistance to this idea. All Christians were under attack by the Jewish leaders, and Stephen, as an active member of this new Christian congregation, was 'performing great portents and signs' among the people. When the religious leaders rose up to dispute with him, they could not hold their own against the wisdom from God that he spoke. They paid false witnesses to claim that Stephen had blasphemed against Moses, which got everyone all heated up. In response, Stephen launched into a revealing history of God's dealings with the Jews from Abraham's time, and it's connection to the coming of Jesus as Messiah, something the religious leaders refused to accept and did not want to hear. His words of truth brought on such an emotional reaction that these religious leaders "cried out at the top of the voice and put their hands over their ears and rushed upon him with one accord...casting stones at him. "

He was killed, basically, for telling the truth.
