The air is already close to 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon and about 0.04% carbon dioxide, therefore oxygen in the air is already diluted with nitrogen. This means that things don't burn nearly as fast as they would if the air were 100% oxygen, and things would burn more slowly if the air had more nitrogen, argon or carbon dioxide in it. Nitrogen doesn't help anything burn, but it will burn itself if there is oxygen present and the temperature is over about 900 deg. F. That is why automobile and jet airplane exhausts contain some nitrogen oxides. Neither argon or carbon dioxide will burn not matter how high the temperature is.

This may seem strange at first, but oxygen is not flammable. Oxygen itself doesn't burn, but it is necessary for other things, called fuels, to burn. Anything that burns is called a fuel. To cause a fire, you need a fuel, and oxidant, and a source of ignition, like a spark or a flame or something very hot. Oxygen isn't the only thing that will cause things to burn. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is very effective at making things burn, as does fluorine or chlorine gas.

How will burning be affected if nitrogen is not in the air to act as a dilute for oxygen?

Burning will be more agressive and faster. Also self-ignition occurs at a lower temperatures when there is more O2 available.

A necessary ingredient for burning?

Oxygen is a necessary ingredient for burning.

Where does a chemical reaction occur on a candle?

When a candle burns the wax is reacting with oxygen in the air to give out heat and light. If you give the candle more oxygen then it will burn brighter ... but it will burn out more quickly. The burning of the candle (a chemical reaction) is affected by the number of oxygen molecules around it.So the speed of the chemical reaction is affected by the concentration of oxygen

What is the role of oxygen while burning matter?

Oxygen is the oxydant in the reaction of burning.

Does oxygen gas support burning?

Oxygen is colourless, support burning but don't smell.

How can you stop your burning?

to stop oxygen for burning

Where does the oxygen needed for burning wood come from?

Oxygen is part of the mixture of gases we breath. Therefore, burning wood uses the oxygen in the atmosphere.

How will burning be affected if nitrogen is not in air to act as a diluent for oxygen?

Nitrogen being diluent for the gases in our atmosphere reduces the combustion process as it dilutes the oxygen in the atmosphere, otherwise every combustion process will be very rapid and will start with a bang. :)

How is burning iron a similar reaction to burning?

Because burning is a a reaction with oxygen, an oxydation.

What is the difference between burning steel wool in air and burning it in a pure oxygen?

burns faster in pure oxygen as the percentage of oxygen is less in air

What gas in the air is burning up in burning?

Combustion consumes oxygen.

Which gas helps in burning?

Burning is combustion, which is an oxidation reaction that requires oxygen. Therefore oxygen promotes burning, as it is a reactant in the reaction, and higher concentrations of a reactant will result in a faster rate of reaction (collision theory).
