The human body will begin to digest the food that is ingested; however, the efficiency of breaking down the food into usable energy will be considerably hindered. At rest, the burning of calories is unsubstantial; therefore, consumption of food before sleep is not recommended. Yet, there are instances when eating may have some benefit. If it is difficult to fall asleep, or a day has been stressful, foods with whole grains such as oatmeal or bread and fruits like bananas have nutrients which actually slow down the processes within the body and trigger a "bedtime" response. Also, depending on what one has eaten the night before, there may be a feeling of "heaviness" in the morning, or a lack of hunger because the body was not given adequate time for digestion. This could, essentially, have a negative reaction on one's body for the entire day, upsetting the routine schedule ratio of food consumption to rest.

Some sleep related eating disorders can cause some people to compulsively sleep walk and eat. Sometimes these individuals will eat very bizarre items such as raw food, animal food, but will tend to go for the more sugary foods.

Also a person may try to make up for the lack of energy by munching on something that will give them a quick source of energy. Sleep deprivation can at times lead to weight gain because of this.

Sleeping patterns have been shown to be somewhat interconnected with eating habits and vice-versa.

There has been a link to obesity and not getting enough sleep. People who don't get enough sleep has been shown in studies to initiate an insulin response. It has been shown that the insulin in the system of people who were deprived of sleep compared to people who got more sleep had lower amounts of insulin in their system causing weight gain.

If you miss meals because of your sleep schedule, and this starts to happen regularly, you will mess up your body's metabolism to where it gets used to not eating that particular meal, like skipping breakfast. Then if you start eating 3 square meals a day, you can see some weight gain.

Also, sleep naturally slows down your metabolism. When you sleep your body shuts down a lot of your brains activity, your digestion slows down so you aren't burning as many calories. So sleeping too much can end up in obesity too.

Sleep is very important for your mental state and your physical state. If mind and body are in harmony, you have the best chance at staying healthy.

Sleeping right after you eat can cause you to gain weight because while you are sleeping you aren't moving around to work off the sugars & fat that you had just eaten.
