It's difficult to compare the quality of two schools with different academic goals. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) claims to have the world's best research-oriented aerospace engineering program, and offers a PhD as its highest degree. On the other hand, Embry Riddle claims to be the world's best aviation and aerospace engineering school with an emphasis on science, practice and business applications. The highest degree Embry Riddle offers is a Master's.
In terms of academic quality, MIT is considered the better school by far. U.S. News & World Reports gives MIT, which is ranked first in the schools offering PhDs, an overall score of 94; they give Embry Riddle (Daytona Campus), ranked first in schools offering a Master's, a score of 73.
Interestingly, Embry Riddle's Prescott, AZ campus is ranked third for Master's degrees, behind both the Daytona campus and the United States Air Force Academy.
Some other differences include selectivity: MIT admits only 12.5% of applicants; Embry Riddle admits 78.3%.
MIT's tuition and fees for 2008-09 is $36,390; Embry Riddle's is $27,540.
