For a federal return, it depends on the source of the income (whether it was earned or unearned income), the age of the dependent, and whether any of it came from self-employment.

See Table 2 on page 3 of Publication 501 and Table 3 on page 4 of Publication 501:

The rules for state returns will vary by state.

But if this person had any taxes withheld from his wages or other payments, he should file a return even if he doesn't have to. That is because withholding almost never equals the actual amount of tax due and he might be owed a refund. If he doesn't file, he won't get a refund.

Should you file a US tax return if you are still claimed as a dependent on your parent's US tax return?

Yes, you must file a tax return, even if someone else claims you as a dependent, if you had earned income or interest. Most taxpayers who are claimed as dependents on someone else's return use form 1040EZ, especially if they claim the standard deduction and do not need to itemize deductions.

When do dependents have to file a tax return?

Generally, dependents have to file a tax return when their income exceeds a certain amount for their age and filing status. Single or Married Filing Jointly under 65 must file when their earned income is over $5,450 for 2008 ($5,700 for 2009). Single dependent 65 and older has to file when their earned income is over $6,800 for 2008 ($7,100 for 2009). Married Filing Jointly 65 and older must file when their earned income is over $6,500 for 2008 ($6,800 for 2009). There are also filing requirements based on unearned income and gross income. There are also four other conditions which require a dependent to file a tax return, including having net earnings from self-employment of at least $400.00 and receiving advance earned income credit payments from your employer.

If you are a teen earned 223.00 in 2009 and paid no federal income tax do you have to file federal income tax for 2009?

If you do not have any other income other than the 223 earned income and no federal income taxes were withheld and you are a dependent on another taxpayers income tax return you would not have any reason to file a income tax return for the tax year 2009.

What is the minimum income requirement in order to file an income tax return individually and not as a dependent?

Everyone is allowed to file an individual tax return, whether they are a dependent or not. Even if you are a dependent, you are required to file your own tax return if you have sufficient income to require the filing of a tax return. There is one exception: If a child under 18 (24 if a fulltime student) has income ONLY from interest and dividends and has income under $9500 (in 2009), the parents may report the dividends and interest on Form 8814 instead of filing a return for the child if they wish. And even if you are not required to file a return, you are allowed to file a return, whether you are a dependent or not. You would want to file a return if you had tax withheld from your salary or from other payments or are eligible for a refundable tax credit. If you choose not to file, you will eventually forfeit your refund. With the one exception noted above, your parents (or whoever is claiming you as a dependent) are not allowed to claim your income or your refund on their tax return.

Can you claim your wife as dependent on taxes?

Your wife is not a dependent, however, you can file a joint return (meaning that you and your wife file a single tax return for both of you) which will effectively give you a tax benefit for supporting your wife (assuming that you do support her).

Do you have to file a tax return if you made less than 8000?

Yes and no. If you're being claimed as someone else's dependent, you're required to file a return if you're single under 65 with earned income over $5,700 or single over 65 with over $7,100 earned income. If you're being claimed as someone else's dependent, you're required to file if you're married under 65 with earned income over $5,700 or if you're married over 65 with over $6,800 earned income. If you're not being claimed as someone else's dependent you aren't required to file with less than $8,000 earned income UNLESS you're Married Filing Separately with income of at least $3,650.Even though you may not be required to file, you should file to get a refund if any federal tax has been withheld from your pay during the year. You also should file if you're eligible for certain credits, such as earned income, additional child tax credit, making work pay, government retiree, etc.

If you're 17 years old and earned 1500 income and you're claimed on your parents' return do you need to fill out a tax return?

No. For 2008 as a single dependent under 65 you only would be required to file if your earned income was over $5,450. For 2009 you only would be required to file if your income was over $5,700. Although you're not required to file, you should file anyway if any income tax was withheld from your earnings in order to receive a refund of that withholding.

You were a full time student in 2008 and 2009 with no earned income can you still file for the American opportunity credit?

As a dependent on another taxpayers income tax return you would not be qualified to claim the education benefits.

What if you do not file a tax return?

If you had no earned income, or you were, perhaps receiving SSI benefits as your only income, then there is no need to file a tax return. However, if you had earned income and make it a habit to not file, it will eventually catch up with you and could be the result of an audit and you owing the IRS.
