There's probably an obscene acronym or two, but nothing official. "Democrats" is usually abbreviated as "Dems."

Contrary to popular belief, Nast did not create the Democratic donkey, though he did popularize this symbol through his art.
They are symbols of political opposition. The Democrats feel that the Republicans are stodgy and slow, and the Republicans feel that the Democrats are obstinate and annoying. By now, it's just tradition.
