We cannot see incident light in the visible light frequency specrum. If we could, we would not be able to discern anything, everything would be a bright fog. All the light we see has been bounced off something on it's way to us. We see the reflection of the visible light frequency spectrum off surfaces of objects, the atmosphere, rain, dust etc. It is that which gives us the light and shade with which we determine shape and distance. Space is a vacuum with very little for the light rays to bounce off. We see light reflecting off the constellations and planets.
