Assuming that you were At Fault in the accident: you broke it, you bought it. Do you have full coverage on a car that you own? It might cover the damage if you were only using his car temporarily while yours was unavailable. If another driver was at fault, your friend should be trying to collect from him or his insurance.

It depends if you are asking the question from a legal stand point or from a moral one.

Yes. Common sense and common moral values dictate that if you broke it you need to make every effort to fix or replace it. Not to say that this is feasible in every instance but I would add that it could also depend on your friends attitude and position on what occurred. Failure to live up to moral expectations can often result in hesitancy the next time we need help from a friend or even the loss of long valued friendships but it could be that your friends expectations were not so high.

No. Legally when when we make the decision to lend out our vehicle, courts have consistently determined that in doing so we have by default accepted the risk that the property might be damaged or even disappear never to be seen again, In simpler terms we made the decision to lend it out, so we must accept the consequences of that action.

If the accident causes damages to another vehicle or person through an at fault accident. Both the driver and the ownerare liable for the full cost of damages to the person or property of others. The at fault driver is liable because he or she caused the accident. The owner is liable because it was his or her vehicle.

Additionally
Both concepts can be affected by whether there were liability terms ( written or verbal ) agreed between the two of you at the time you borrowed the vehicle. This is why rental car companies always have a contract defining responsibilities and make sure we have the required insurance when we rent a car.

If you hit someone in an accident does your insurance pay for the repairs?

If you hit someone in a car accident and you have auto insurance even if they don't your insurance will cover repairing both automobiles. This is why you carry insurance. You will not be charged anything for the repairs to the other persons automobile. It is always best to let the insurance pay for it! It beats the other party suing you, that can get ral ugly and make your insurance go way up if you loose.
