An attorney is (nearly) a human being. Talk to them and demand honesty from that point on, unless you feel that the infraction cannot be forgiven - in which case you would have to end the relationship and find another lawyer. Tell the new lawyer what happened in order to (hopefully) prevent it from happening again.

I was involved in a car accident in June of 2004 which resulted in my having to have three cervical disk replaced. I have a history of disk problems and had another disk replaced in 2002 but was doing fine until the accident. Well i hired an attorney who then had me to sign a document which stated that if i were to recovery any money in this case that it would go to the insurance company to cover my medical bills which totalled over $29,000. I signed the document that my attorney had me to sign. I never questioned it because i trusted my attorney to take care of me. Well three years ago i got a settlement of 12,000 and about three months later i received a call from my attorney's office saying that i was not suppose to get that money, that it was suppose to go to the insurance company which meant that i would not have gotten anything. The attorney's office apologized for what happened but unfortunately, apology isn't stopping me from being sued. My attorney got paid to represent me, however i feel that i was misrepresented. What can i do? By the way, he is also being sued by the insurance company.

If you feel you were misled, you can file a complaint with the board that regulates the licensing of attorneys. You could also file a separate lawsuit.

What is the difference between a lawyer and an attorney at law?

In general, the terms lawyer and attorney are used interchangeably to refer to a legal professional who is licensed to practice law. However, an attorney at law specifically refers to a lawyer who is actively practicing law and representing clients in legal matters. So, all attorneys are lawyers, but not all lawyers are actively practicing as attorneys at law.
