The workpiece is held in place by a chuck that rotates. The tool are held (often by hand on a support for woodturning) againt the workpiece to form it in the desired way.

Facing i.e producing a flat surface by cross feeding a tool against rotating workpiece.

Drilling and boring are yet another important operations that can be done on this machine.
