In 1962 Memorial Day was still officially known as Decoration Day and it was observed on Wednesday, May 30. It was observed on May 30th every year from 1868 to 1971. The name of the holiday was officially changed to Memorial Day in 1966. Memorial Day did not become one of the Monday three-day holidays until the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect on January 1, 1971.
