A 'piece of silver' was most likely the Roman denarius. This was the going rate of pay for a day's work for an unskilled worker (such as a labourer, farmer, shepherd etc).
Therefore 30 pieces of silver would be approximately a month's salary for an unskilled worker. If the minimum wage is around £7 an hour ($9) and based on a 40-hour week, in modern terms this would be £280 per week ($360) or aproximately £1120 ($1440). Thus, the amount Judas accepted to betray jesus was hardly a king's ransom!
20 pieces of silver
In the Bible, the value of a pound of silver varies depending on the specific context. For example, in the New Testament, Judas Iscariot was paid thirty pieces of silver for betraying Jesus, which was roughly equivalent to a pound of silver. In modern terms, this could be worth around $200-300.
30 pieces of silver, the same amount that was given for Joseph back in Genesis.
If the pieces are not clearly marked Sterling, they are most likely silver plated. Silver plated items have a much lower value than sterling ones. If it is silver plated, the pitcher might be worth $40-50. If it is sterling, it would be worth at least ten times that.

30 pieces of silver
Larger silver coins like the tetradrachms of Ptolemy (believed to be the Bible's “30 pieces of silver” paid to Judas) were worth much more. At 365 pieces each year (one a day), 50,000 denarii would have paid a Roman soldier or highly skilled craftsman for almost 137 years!

The first usage of money in the Bible is when Abraham buys a burial plot for Sarah from the Hittites for 400 shekels of silver (Genesis 23). The second usage is when Joseph is sold by his brothers to the Ishmaelites for 20 pieces of silver (Genesis 37:28). How much do you think these amounts would be worth in modern currency?
