There is no definitive answer to whether Gordon has a helmet or not. There is evidence supporting both possibilities. Some common arguments for and against a helmet are listed below.
- The HEV suit provides a HUD with aiming reticule, health monitors, hazard warning signs and a zoom function (not in Mark IV).
- Gordon can take a considerable amount of damage to the head before dying. This damage is accompanied by a reduction in suit power.
- Gordon can breathe in Xen, which is unlikely to have a safe atmosphere if it has an atmosphere at all.
- The dead Black Mesa scientists found in Xen are wearing helmets.
- There is an official Valve hl1 picture depicting Gordon in the HEV suit carrying a helmet, although most official artwork shows him as helmetless.
- While the Mark IV HEV suit appears helmetless in storage, it also appears gloveless. The suit's gloves are clearly visible in game.
- The second bodygroup of "player.mdl" adds a helmet.
- In game characters quickly recognise Gordon. This would be unlikely if Gordon was wearing a helmet.
- Most official artwork by Valve depicts Gordon with no helmet, although there is at least one official depiction of him holding a helmet.

The HEV helmet might retract into the suit when not required. An argument against this possibility is that the HUD never disappears.
