"there is blood on my head" is a reference to Pontius Pilate, the man blamed for the crucifiction of Jesus. This, said by hale, who is to blame for Proctor going to hang, is said to draw parallels between Jesus and John Proctor

The Crucible was written in the same era as the "Cold War" was taking place, between Russia and the USA (Basically both had nuclear weapons but neither was going to use them first, so they sat it out for a good few years before calling a truce). During this time, anybody with the remotest links or good opinion of Communism (Russia's answer to the Western idea of Capitalism; basically everybody is equal and everybody should receive the same, despite the effort put in by anyone or the importance of their job) would be prosecuted. "The Crucible" is a story featuring the character John Proctor. He says Abigail told him she was going to accuse Elizabeth.
Abby was the maid of Elizabeth and John Proctor's home. John had an affair with Abby and Elizabeth found out and threw her out of their home. John was good to Elizabeth after that and he never went back to Abby even though she wanted him.
