I always took that as I will never know how much my sins increased the amount that Christ had to suffer on the cross (vs. if I had not sinned) to obtain atonement for me. To me it means that I don't have any hope of understanding just how much suffering Christ went through for me. We can see the physical pain; even that, we now are finding out, may have been significantly more severe than traditional renditions have depicted. But how much agony of the soul did He who was God incarnate have to go through to be separated from God the Father? We're born separate; we don't know any better. I think it means that we will never know how much pain and suffering Christ went through to wash our sins away, and no matter what we may come across, there will be nothing that compares to what he has done for us. He has shown us grace - he has forgiven us for our sins even when we don't deserve it. We should be so very thankful for what he has done for us.
