It may be reasonably claimed that World War I started long before 1914 in at least this sense: the contemporary rivalry among European nations was tending towards armed conflict of some kind. With their military build-ups and their fervent nationalistic spirits, the leading European powers (among others on the continent) had been preparing themselves for a confrontation for many years: it could only be a matter of time.
