Several actions during the election period between 1828 caused increased sectionalism. First, the tariff of 1828 was very divisive according to location. Northerners favored the tariff, which protected northern manufacturers, and provided additional funds for the northern infrastructure. The south, as mainly a consumer populace, got nothing out of this, and it actually hurt them with higher prices as a result of the tariff. The Nullification Crisis of 1828, saw Jackson go up against Henry Clay when South Carolina attempted to reject the tariff. Andrew Jackson was a slave owner, and obviously fiercely pro-slavery, since it was one of the reasons he sought to defund the national bank.
