The US Supreme Court was scheduled to convene for the first time in the Royal Exchange Building, in the nation's temporary capital of New York City, on February 1, 1790. Due to poor travel conditions, the Court didn't actually meet until February 2.

The early Court had no offices or chambers, as they only gathered twice per year, and didn't hear their first case until 1792. The Justices used the original sessions to discuss the Court's structure, power and responsibilities. The rest of their time was spent "riding circuit," traveling through the states to preside over trials and appeals in various Circuit courts.
