It exposes more of the solid to whatever you want to mix it with so that whatever you are doing, whether it be a physical or chemical change, will take place more rapidly.

Solids will expand when heated, contract when cooled.

The minimal surface area of a solid will be a perfect sphere.

Anything you do to deviate from a sphere will increase the surface area.

Flattening a metal like gold due to its malleability/Ductility will also increase its surface area.

Smaller objects have more surface area to total volume than larger objects... so a bag of BB's would have more surface area than a large ball, although I suppose the surface area to mass would be the same.

Highly porous materials, or rough or convoluted surfaces will also have high surface areas.

this question doesn't make much sense, but to increase the surface area of a 3D solid such as a cube or a pyramid or a sphere, I guess u would just add more mass to it

How does increasing the surface area of a solid reactant affect the energy of molecular collisions?

Reactions depend on molecular collisions. If a solid reactant is a solid, grinding it into smaller particles will increase the surface area. The more surface area, the faster the molecular collisions, which in turn increases the rate of reaction.

What does it mean to increase the surface area of a solid?

increase the surface area of a solid means to increase the area of solid

List five ways you could increase the rate of a chemical reaction?

1) Add a catalyst 2) Add heat 3) Stir 4) Mix 5) Surface area of the reactant

When you crush a solid do you increase or decrease surface area?

You increase the surface area

You can speed up a reaction if you break the solid reactant into smaller pieces what factor does this describe?

When you break up a solid into smaller pieces it dissolves faster when you have big pieces of the solid you have to wait for the substance that is dissolving it ti be picked up by the object that is being dissolved but when the pieces are smaller it dissolves faster because their smaller and the substance dissolving the object get picked up much faster

What will increasing the surface area of a solid do to the dissolving rate of that solid?

It will increase it, as more of the outer surface of the solid is incontact with the liquid that it is dissolving in. :)

How is the rate of a reaction affected by reactant surface area?

That there is a bigger area of a solid exposed, so there is a greater chance of collisions causing a reaction.

Why does crushing a solid increase the speed at which the solid dissolves?

ALL reactions (apart from Nuclear) take place on the surface. By crushing the solid you are increasing the surface area and also the SA/Volume ratio. This increased surface area increases the area available for the dissolution reaction.

What does grinding solid reactants into powder - do to the reactant particles?

The powdered form of a solid reactant has an aggregate surface area that is many times greater than the solid blockfrom which it came. This makes any reaction proceed faster and more efficiently, usually resulting in enhanced yield as well.

What is superficial expansion?

Superficial expansion is the increase in surface area of 1 meter square area of a solid for rise of temperature, 1kelvin is called the coefficient of surface expansion of material of that solid.

What do you increase to have more area exposed so the reaction happens faster?

You increase the surface area of the reactant(s), which exposes more of it. To do this, you usually must reduce the particle size; in other words, grind it up.

How do you increase the rate of a reaction of a solid?

Grinding the solid into a powder increases the surface area and increases the rate of the reaction. Heating it would also increase the rate.
