This is not very remarkable; serious genealogists know that people's family trees, which you might expect to look like an triangle pointing downward (each person has two parents, and each of them has two parents, and so on, so it gets wider as you go further back in time) are actually diamond-shaped (they get wider up to a certain point, and then they start getting narrower again). If you think about it for a moment you'll realize this literally HAS to happen: assuming about 3 generations per century (for most of history it was probably closer to 4, but let's not quibble), a thousand years ago ... 30 generations ... there are 2^30, or approximately a billion, places for ancestors in your family tree, but there were far fewer than a billion people alive at the time; a LOT of those places have to be filled by the same person appearing in multiple slots. Since a thousand years ago most people didn't move or travel much, it's quite likely that you share at least one ancestor with anyone else whose ancestors came from more or less the same geographical area that yours did.

It's been estimated that, if you're of European descent, you probably (extremely probably, like 99.999...% likely) have a common ancestor with everyone else of European descent no further back than, say, 900 AD, and quite possibly closer than that.
