The Lake Chad is a fresh water lake. An amazing fact about the Lake Chad is that it is a closed lake with no direct outlet for its water. Despite this fact, experts are yet to find an explanation why the water has low salinity value as will be expected because of high evaporation. In the northern part of the Lake and in some desert oases particularly in Niger some evaporite (Natron) deposits are mined. This could be intepreted to mean that in the long distance past, the Lake was salty.
