It's very likely that he is a Republican. The particular section of Tennessee he is from was Unionist during the Civil War and has been dominated by the Republicans ever since.

Looking at the various election results from Hawkins County, it seems that most local politics is non-partisan or most candidates run as Independent candidates. It is most likely that he is Independent or ran as an Independent in the Mount Carmel elections. I can find no record of any political donations exceeding $200 in his name, either.
