The term "CD" means Compact Disk..so there really is no product just called a "CD"..it must be CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW,etc. "CD" means the same thing in all categories. The difference lies in the letters after CD, for example CD-ROM mean Compact Disk Read Only Memory which means you cannot write to it you can only read it as in play a movie. CD-RW, means Compact Disk Read/Write, which means you can read and write to it. Hope this helps.
They are totally different. You cannot play a CD-ROM in a CD/DVD player; but, depending on your computer software, you can play a CD on your computer.

In other words, a CD-ROM can only be used in a computer, but a CD can be used in a CD/DVD player and on any computers that have software for playing CD's.

No. A CD-ROM is factory-printed to have certain data. You cannot add to it or remove data. A CD-R is a blank disc upon which you can add data. Once the data is written to the disc, it cannot be removed and will appear the same as a CD-ROM to the computer.

No they are not. Rom= Read Only Memory, this is a type of memory used to store data for later use which can be in a hard drive, zip cartridge, usb stick, CD-ROM etc. Cd-Rom= Compact Disk-Read Only Memory. This is an specific kind of storage used to keep data for later use

In the computer field, things are more complicated. A disc that is pressed by a software publisher and then distributed for sale is referred to as a CD-ROM since it cannot be written to or otherwise modified. A CD-R is a recordable CD. This means that it can be opened for writing, written to, and then closed. Once it is closed, it can never be reopened for additional writing again. CD-RW stands for Compact Disc--ReWritable. The great advantage of the CD-RW discs and why I most often use them for moving small amounts of data around to machines that are not on my network is that they can be written, erased, and re-written as many as 1000 times before being worn out. In practice, I have found that a few dozen times is about all that the discs will usually handle.

As for a direct answer to the question of whether a CD and CD-ROM are one and the same thing, the answer is generally yes. A music CD and a software publisher's CD-ROM are permanently written and unalterable by the end-user, so to that extent they are the same. Also, they tend to be created with more professional grade discs that have a life expectancy of about 50 years as opposed to about 20 for the retail grade burnable discs that the general public can purchase.

Finally in regard to whether they are the same in the common vernacular, the answer is yes. If someone speaks of a CD or CD-ROM when referring to a computer disc, they mean the same thing.

Oh, one more thought just came to me. Back in the early days of CD drives and continuing to the early days of DVD drives, there were various types of drives out with some called CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives while others were called CD-RW or DVD/CD-RW drives. These all meant different things. CD-ROM drives meant that they could only read CDs but that they could not burn them (read: write anything to them). The same thing was true with DVD-ROM drives: they could read DVDs and CDs but could not burn. With CD-RW and DVD/CD-RW drives, they were able to read CDs or both CDs and DVDs, respectively, as well as burn the same types of discs that they could read. These drives were often referred to as combo drives. Now they are simply referred to as DVD-RW drives since it is understood by most that if a drive can read a DVD, it can also read a CD. The same goes with the burning capability.

I hope this helps answer the question you had. If you have other questions, feel free to drop me a line.
