A monocot (monocotyledon) is one of the two major groups of flowering plants (angiosperms). The amaryllis family, which includes the daffodil, has a bulb which produces one seed-leaf. That is the requirement for monocots - one cotyledon or seed leaf at the sprouting stage of growth.
