Cottage cheese seems to be an in-between, when considered healthy of unhealthy. The good points are that it is high in protein and a source of calcium. However, it is usually high in sodium, contains a bit of cholesterol, contains lacotse (which is a problem for the lactose intolerant), and most of the fat is saturated. To control most of these cons, purchase low or fat free, and search for no-salt-added types. Personally, I like Hood's Low Fat, No-Salt-Added.
It has only 90 calories per 1/2 cup, with only 1 gram of fat (saturated, 2% for total fat, and 4% for sat. fat), 6 grams of carbohydrates (2%) (5 grams sugar, from lactose), 14 grams of protein (28%), 15 mg of cholesterol (5%), and only 55 mg of sodium (2%). However, it only has about 8% of the daily value of calcium, which is less than many brands.
