I have type 1 and the only other person in my family that has this is my great uncle, but other than that I don't think that it has been passed through my family.
I think that someone might be more likely to have diabetes if it a running in the family, but I do know that it can be a result of disease, I had a teacher who had his mother get diabetes after having ME and his sister developed it after having the chicken pox virus.
As for type 2 diabetes, I think there may be some link between this in terms of family history, but not a very strong one.
This is mostly caused by obesity, no exercise and an unhealthy lifestyle, or something along those lines.
