On the contrary, it is best to never give lawyers the chance because they will always attempt to obfuscate for their own purposes. The "true spirit" of the founding fathers is clearly and readily apparent in the documents themselves and in the writings and commentaries, like The Federalist Papers, of the founding fathers. These were written for the people, not for lawyers. This country was founded on the principle of "natural rights". Lawyers have turned that to their own advantage by changing the name to "natural law". In our time "natural law" has become a bad word--taboo for anyone in politics. A candidate for the supreme court would never be approved if he/she admitted to a belief in "natural law" (Clarence Thomas was quizzed relentlessly about this in his confirmation hearings because he had a reputation for leaning toward "natural law". He denied it vigorously)--even though it is the new term for the philosophy given such eloquent voice by Thomas Jefferson in our Declaration of Independence. Our nation is in a sad state and it is primarily the lawyers and their interpretations that have put us there. Well, that and the greed and self-centeredness of our people.
