I don't think its a bad example for kids. I thought it was a clean and very nice anime. My mom would watch it with us when it was on cartoon network. If you have any doubts about any anime/cartoon it's always better to watch it first yourself before your kids do and decide if that's what you want your kids to watch. That's what I do before I let my younger brothers (9 & 8) watch something with me. I watch it first to make sure there is nothing inappropriate.

I feel that Sailor Moon IS setting a bad example for children and here is why..
1. Nudity, and nude flashes - This occurs during the transformation, and in my opinion, it is not necessary to show a cartoon character naked for any amount of time, even a split second. Why can't they transform without nude flashes? The subconscious has no way of filtering this content, it is just accepted as part of the transformation process.
2. Suggestive Apparel, and Pantie Shots - Some of the outfits that are worn consist of VERY SHORT SKIRTS that only a prostitute could get away with in public, and they constantly show the young ladies panties. Unnecessary display of under garments for a cartoon! This is meant for children?!?
3. Possible Subliminal Messages - I think this material is unsuitable for children, and sometimes wonder about subliminal messages embedded within the visual flashes, and also the audio.
The scantily clad characters are not role-models I want my little girls to have.
Yes, Sailor Moon is setting a bad example, in my opinion.
Fans of Sailor Moon will more than likely disagree. In that case, refer to number 3 of the list, and then you might have something.

In my opinion Sailor Moon wasn't too inappropriate. Yeah some things were different, but though the show targeted kids, many older audiences liked it. Sailor Stars is the last arc of the Sailor Moon story.
