teach dependence on God - Deut 8:2-6

produce strong character. - James 1:2-3
The classic example is the story of Job. Job lost his children, his possessions and underwent terrible physical suffering. But God said there is none as righteous as Job in all the world. So this suffering was not because of some sin of Job's the purpose of the suffering was to show that his faith was genuine
We can conclude these sorts of experiences are not abnormal Christian experiences.
The important thing about any suffering or hardship a christian may go through is what is your response?
Job's wife counseled him to curse God and die (Job 2:9). Job said to his wife shouldn't we accept good and bad from God? (Job 2:10). Job's attitude was: even if God kills me I will still trust in Him (Job 13:15).
So yes sometimes suffering/hard times are a result of sin in a Christian's life and sometimes God uses such things to improve our walk with Him and to refine our character.
